Accomplishments as Director of the Center for Automotive Research
The OSU Center for Automotive Research, CAR, conducts interdisciplinary research on advanced automotive and transportation technologies and Systems Engineering , focusing on novel propulsion systems, alternative fuels, human safety and the environment. CAR offers advanced experimental facilities that include engine and vehicle dynamometers; electric, hybrid-electric propulsion, fuel cell and electrochemical energy storage research facilities; and a hydrogen refueling station. CAR has developed and operates a number of prototype vehicles powered by various forms of advanced propulsions systems and alternative fuels. CAR engages the participation of 16 faculty from eleven departments in five colleges (from ME to Anatomy, from Chemistry to Management Sciences, from BioMedical Engineering to Industrial Design), over 50 graduate students and a staff of over 30, and had annual expenditures of $5.7M in 2008 with a balanced portfolio divided between the automotive industry and government agencies. CAR sponsors include most major automotive manufacturers and top tier suppliers; government sponsors include U.S. DOE and DOT, NSF, and the U.S. Army. The Center also provides facilities and support for 5 automotive undergraduate student project teams (Formula SAE, SAE Mini Baja, DOE/GM ChallengeX hybrid-electric vehicle, solar car and Buckeye Bullet electric land speed record vehicle). Finally CAR is the home of a U.S. DOE Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Center on Advanced Propulsion Systems, co-sponsored by automotive OEMs. GATE provides support for graduate research in advanced engines and emissions, electric energy storage systems, fuel cell systems, hybrid vehicles and system integration studies.
